About us

Centre Communidée is a space for the homeschooling community in and around Montreal to get together and get organized. We aim to build community among homeschooling families, expand educational opportunities, share resources and information, and promote a positive image of homeschooling.

Communidée is a volunteer-run, bilingual, non-profit organization. Membership fees are used to pay for rent, utilities, and some supplies. Most activities are organized and run by people from our community, and are included in the membership fees.

All activities are interest-based and are not designed to meet any educational requirements. As homeschooling families, you and your child are responsible for your child’s education. Communidée’s activities and workshops are offerred as a supplement to your homeschooling experience.

We are a secular organization, open to all homeschooling families. Our members include French and English families, children of all ages, and all styles of homelearning. We ask that respect is shown through our differences.

How it works

Centre Communidée is open Monday to Friday from 10am until 4pm or later. There is a closed room, where we have a few planned activities each day, and two open rooms for socializing, free play and spontaneous activities. We have a full kitchen, wireless internet and a lending library, as well as an organic vegetable coop and collective hot lunches. We are next to a park with two playgrounds, a water spray and soccer field, and across from tennis courts and a basketball court!

Every few months we have a planning meeting where families offer ideas and activities to be put on the calendar. Planned activities get posted on the Communidée website as well as on the bulletin board at the centre. Many have limited space and require signing up in advance.

There is a Board of Directors which handles the administration and big picture decisions of the centre, while the day-to-day operations are the responsibility of all members. Members are expected to sign up for a maintenance task each time they come, and we often need people to take on jobs such as librarian, translator, and graphic artist. There is a fundraising committee, a political action committee, and new ideas and projects are being created all the time. If you want to get involved, see the jobs list or speak with an active member.
